How Earthquakes cause Damage

  • there are p waves and s waves
    • there is also an aftershock too
  • if the soil if not compacted then during an earthquake it will shake more

Local Soil Conditions

  • different kinds on soil conditions
    • loose soil shakes more than solid rock
  • buildings built on flat solid plains will shake less than sandy beaches

making buildings safer

  • you take off heavy things above the bed
    • you make the house more sturdy
    • you must make it very flexible
  • put cement under the house to make it more sturdy

  • when an earthquake occurs you duck and cover until the earthquake is over
